ABSTRACT

Carica papaya leaf extracts are known to have many beneficial medicinal properties. Recent studies have claimed possible beneficial effects of Carica papaya leaf extracts in treating patients with dengue infection. The present study aims to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Carica papaya leaf extracts in treating dengue patients. Carica papaya leaf extracts were given to dengue infected patients and their blood samples were daily monitored. Polyserositis condition of the patients was analysed by ultrasonography before and after the completion of Carica papaya leaf extract treatment. Repeated Measures ANOVA and descriptive measures such as mean, standard error values were calculated. Before the administration of Carica papaya leaf extracts the patients had a low WBC and platelet counts. After the administration of Carica papaya leaf extracts there was a good amount of increase in the counts of WBC and platelets (p<0.05) in all the patients and the patients started recovering from dengue infection. Ultrasonographic findings revealed clearance in pleural ascites, pericardiac effusion and peritoneal ascites. Blood analysis reports, ultrasonographic findings, statistical results and patients recovery from dengue infection clearly shows the therapeutic role of Carica papaya leaf extracts in treating dengue infected patients. Further studies are necessary for identification of the compounds present in Carica papaya leaf extract and exploring their therapeutic role in curing dengue infection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Chikungunya virus has caused numerous large outbreaks in India. Suspected blood samples from the epidemic were collected and characterized for the identification of the responsible causative from Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. METHODS: RT-PCR was used for screening of suspected blood samples. Primers were designed to amplify partial E1 gene and the amplified fragment was cloned and sequenced. The sequence was analyzed and compared with other geographical isolates to find the phylogenetic relationship. RESULTS: The sequence was submitted to the Gen bank DNA database (accession DQ888620). Comparative nucleotide homology analysis of the AP Ra-CTR isolate with the other isolates revealed 94.7+/-3.6 per cent of homology of CHIKAPRa-CTR with other isolates of Chikungunya virus at nucleotide level and 96.8+/-3.2 per cent of homology at amino acid level. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The current epidemic was caused by the Central African genotype of CHIKV, grouped in Central Africa cluster in phylogenetic trees generated based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences.

ABSTRACT

Spinal paragangliomas are uncommon neoplasms and subject of much debate regarding the factors governing their biological behaviour. We describe the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) features of six cases of spinal paraganglioma. The mean age of patients was 40 years (range 20-60 years) with a male to female ratio of (2:1). Majority presented with low backache, sphincter disturbances and sensory symptoms. All tumors were intradural in the cauda region one of them extending to the filum. Only one showed focal extradural extension on microscopy. Gross total resection of tumors was possible in all cases. Histologically four showed classical 'zell-ballen' pattern and two revealed an ependymal morphology. On immunohistochemistry, in all the six cases the chief cells were intensely labeled by antibody to chromogranin but not for GFAP while staining for synaptophysin was less intense and variable in five. Sustentacular cells in all cases showed strong expression for S-100 protein and chief cells were stained light in three cases. Low MIB-1 labeling index of 0.01-2% was noted in five cases and in the sixth it was 5%. None of the tumours recurred. Immunohistochemistry assisted in differentiating these relatively benign neural crest tumours from the more aggressive spinal ependymomas.

ABSTRACT

Effects of exposure of an alcoholic beverage (arrack and its equivalent quantity of alcohol throughout pregnancy and lactation on brain lipids were investigated. Female rats were exposed to arrack (12.00 ml/kg body weigh/day) and ethanol (4.00 g/kg body weight day) before conception and throughout gestation and lactation. For 21 days pups were nursed by their own mothers, afterwards they were fed normal laboratory feed. We found that the level of cholesterol, phospholipids, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids, cerebrosides, ceramide dihexosides, ceramide polyhexosides, sulfatids,, mono and diglycosyl diglycerides and gangliosides were increased in the brain of 21st and 45th day pups. The alterations in the glycolipid profile of the brain persisted even when pups were not directly exposed to alcohol. These alterations in the glycolipid and ganglioside metabolism may be associated with the developmental abnormalities of the brain seen in FAS. The elevation produced in the glycolipid profile of arrack administered pups were more than that caused by its equivalent quantity of ethanol. This suggested an interaction of congeners in the arrack with the alcohol.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a country liquor (Arrack) and the equivalent quantity of ethanol on liver function and lipid metabolism in utero. Female rats of average weight 125 g were exposed to Arrack (12 ml/kg body weight/day) and ethanol (3.2 ml/kg body weight/day) for 15 days before conception and throughout gestation. On 13th day and 19th day of gestation, altered liver function and hyperlipidemia was seen in the fetus of both the treated groups. Altered liver function was evidenced by the increased activity of alcohol dehydrogenase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase or alanine amino transferase (GPT). Hyperlipidemia was caused by increased biosynthesis since the incorporation of 14C acetate to lipids and activities of HMG CoA reductase and lipogenic enzymes were elevated. Arrack seemed to potentiate the toxicity induced by alcohol indicating the role of non ethanolic portion. Hepatic functions of the 13th day fetuses were effected to a lesser degree than the 19th day hepatic liver.

ABSTRACT

Vertebral artery (VA) aneurysms are rare. We present our experience with three cases of VA aneurysms. Two aneurysms were located close to the origin of basilar artery while the third patient had a giant posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysm. These aneurysms were operated by the far lateral inferior suboccipital approach with good results.
